Appearing on 'The Knick'

Recently I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Clive Owen and Steven Soderbergh in a scene from Episode 3 of the upcoming 2nd season of The Knick on Cinemax.

The second season is currently in production and will be released later this year.

Appeared on 'The Blacklist'

I’ve had small speaking roles on television in Australia and Japan before, as well as on several US daytime dramas.

But on Sunday February 1st, in the mid-season return episode airing immediately after the Super Bowl, I made my US prime-time network television debut in NBC’s drama The Blacklist…!

2014 in review - fatherhood is the new black

January 2014 saw the beginning of a new chapter in my life when my wife and I welcomed the arrival of our first child!

Our daughter Astrid has been keeping us busy, and so for most of 2014 I kept a slightly lower profile professionally than in the past.

However, I continued to audition for animation and commercial voice-over work, local and regional theatre productions, prime-time television shows, and feature films.

In September I was very pleased to make time to work with my friends at Australian Made Entertainment on their last New York show, David Williamson’s The Club. It was a rare opportunity for me to appear on stage using my native Australian accent!

In October I was very excited to work on an episode in Season 3 of the hugely popular Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black. I can’t wait to see it when the entire season is released later in 2015.

*** UPDATE ***
The third season of Orange is the New Black will be released on Netflix on June 12, 2015…!

Rave reviews for 'Beauty Queen'

Our production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane at Shakespeare & Company has been received very well by the critics. Here’s what some of them have said about my work as Pato:

New York Times (Ben Brantley) – “a prospective lover, played by a first-rate David Sedgwick.”

Boston Globe (Don Aucoin) – “A hallmark of Sedgwick’s excellent performance as Pato is that he makes clear the fervor of the character’s own dreams”

Berkshire Bright Focus (J. Peter Bergman) – “Sedgwick comes through this performance into a star’s role in this company. He is that strong and endearing and in charge of his inner man. His debut role could lead to more roles in the future. He would be interesting to watch develop within the womb of this theater company family.”

Curtain Up (Elyse Sommer) – “Pato Dooley (David Sedgwick, a charming and worthy successor to Brian O’Byrne who created the role originally)”
“His second act opening monologue in the form of an epistolary proposal is incredibly touching.”

Metroland (B.A. Nilsson) –“ David Sedgwick brings a needed gravitas to the role of Pato, … and the second act begins with Sedgwick’s masterful performance of the show’s celebrated monologue, his recitation of a letter exhorting Maureen to join him.”

The Artery (Ed Siegel) – “(David Sedgwick as her suitor is also excellent.)”

Berkshire Eagle (Jeffrey Borak) – “Pato Dooley (a winning and appealing David Sedgwick)”

Berkshire Fine Arts (Charles Giuliano) – “the fine and manly Pato … In a wonderfully halting manner … speaks of his love for The Beauty Queen of Leenane”

In the Spotlight (Shera Cohen) – “David Sedgwick (the beaux) whose gentleness and understanding is beautiful to watch”

Berkshire on Stage (Gail M. Burns & Larry Murray) – Gail: “Pato is one of my favorite male characters in modern drama, and I loved David Sedgwick in the role. If that Dolores Hooley (or is it Healey) ever gets tired of him I’ll take him off her hands!”

‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ at Shakespeare & Company

I’ve just started rehearsals on my first production with Shakespeare & Company.

The Beauty Queen of Leeenane, the first play to bring Martin McDonagh to the world’s attention, stars Shakespeare & Company founding artistic director, Tina Packer, and is directed by Matthew Penn.

‘A Moon for the Misbegotten’ garners glowing reviews…

The New Jersey theater critics are loving our production!

Rick Busciglio gave us 5 stars: “first-rate theatre”; “masterfully directed”; “a perfect cast”; “an acting master class”; “Sedgwick is perfect as the alcoholic failed actor” – Examiner.com

“Josie … is perfectly embodied by Claire Warden”; “her often drunken father, played by the wonderful Paul Carlin”; “James Tyrone (David Sedgwick) … convincingly unburdens his fears and secrets” – Lori Sender, New Jersey News Room

“The bittersweet affection among the play’s characters and their surrender to their own faults and fates build to heartrending effect”; “Warden’s transformation … makes the show so affecting”; “scenes between Sedgwick and Warden are engrossing” – Ronnie Reich, The Star-Ledger

There’s still time to see the show! – 2 more weeks to go. Tickets and info here.

‘A Moon for the Misbegotten’ at Luna Stage

I’m very excited to be working on my first full production of a Eugene O’Neill play; I’m currently rehearsing the iconic role of Jim Tyrone in this classic of the American canon.

Working with a wonderful cast and director; I can’t wait to open at Luna Stage in New Jersey on April 13th…!

Dialect coach on 'Speaking in Tongues'

I was very pleased to be asked again to act as dialect/accent coach for another Australian Made Entertainment production, Andrew Bovell’s haunting play Speaking in Tongues. This time the cast is small, only 4, and 3 of them are Aussies, so I helped the sole American blend in. Michael Poignand has done a great job, and his work was complimented in the glowing Backstage review!

Dialect coach on 'Savage in Limbo'

Continuing my new sideline in accent and dialect coaching, I’m very proud to be working on Dogface Theatrical’s inaugural production of Savage in Limbo. Who knew Australians like myself were such experts on Shanley-an Bronx accents? 🙂
